About Lake Ponderosa Recreational Area

Located in Shasta County, northern California, Lake Ponderosa Recreational Area surrounds a large reservoir formed by the impoundment of Antlers Creek and other tributaries. The area is managed primarily by the California Department of Parks and Recreation and offers a mix of forested hills, open water, and rugged shoreline. The reservoir spans over 1,500 acres and serves as a focal point for a wide variety of outdoor activities. The surrounding landscape includes mixed conifer forests typical of the Cascade Range foothills, providing habitat for deer, black bear, and numerous bird species. Historically, the reservoir was created by damming, and the site has become a favored weekend and holiday destination for residents of nearby Redding and other regional communities. Visitors enjoy fishing for bass, trout, and catfish; boating with multiple boat ramps; hiking in the adjacent woodlands; and camping in well-maintained campgrounds. Lake Ponderosa also features picnic areas and open spaces for family outings. Its location at approximately 2,900 feet elevation gives a pleasant climate during summer months. Although not as large or famous as some national parks, the area’s relaxed access and variety of available activities make it a popular regional destination. This combination of water-based recreation and forest environment offers visitors an enjoyable experience within California’s northern landscapes.
